My approach to teaching piano is to deliver the material, using the language that is common to the student. By taking this approach, I find that my students feel more comfortable with me and are more productive. I try to find creative ways of making learning and practicing enjoyable not only for the student but for the parents too.

The ultimate goal for each individually crafted course is to provide the student with a sense of participation along with instruction; students need to know that their opinions and thoughts are important.

If you live in the Oakville, Ontario area and looking for a qualified piano teacher with an individualisitc and creative approach to teaching, please contact Alicia on Ritmundi@gmail.com
for rates.

The Benefits of Music Instruction

Piano courses are an excellent way to learn about music, but did you know that music courses can also have other benefits?

Music promotes relaxation, whether it is as a practitioner or an active listener; it is an excellent outlet for children and adults alike.

What are the benefits of my piano program for children?

1. Early musical training helps develop brain areas involved in language and reasoning.

2. Students of the arts learn to think creatively and to solve problems by imagining various solutions, rejecting outdated rules and assumptions. In the arts, questions do not have to have only one right answer.

3. A study of the arts provides children with an internal glimpse of other cultures and teaches them to be empathetic towards the people of these cultures. Cultural Arts in Education leads to respect of other cultures and traditions at an early age.

4. Students of music learn to stretch their inner resources in order to achieve a new level of excellence.

5. Through music study, students learn the value of effort and dedication to achieve excellence and the concrete rewards of hard work.

6. Music provides children with a means of self-expression. Self-esteem is a bi-product of this self-expression.

7. Music performance teaches young people to conquer fear and to take risks. It teaches children how to deal with anxiety at an early age which makes it less of a problem later on in life.

Adults also benefit from classes by learning to reduce stress from the office through music. It is common for my adult students to come directly from their jobs to their piano classes, they say that though the piano may be a challenge at times, it is still rewarding in what they are able to personally obtain from the classes.

Each piano class is individually designed to meet the needs of the student, so there is never the need to worry of being pushed in a direction that you might not be prepared.

If you are interested in learning more about Piano Lessons With Alicia, please contact info@ritmundi.com for rates.

Piano lessons for all ages and schedules in Oakville

Are you a parent in the Oakville area that would like a creative and rewarding activity for your child or even yourself, this season? Piano classes can be used as a creative sedative for a stressful day, whether you are a stay at-home mom or dad or someone who carries a heavy work-load at the office, music is a natural way to relax.

Learning or relearning an activity is always beneficial at any age. Adult students are always astonished to see how much information they have retained (given they previously studied piano) and how quickly they progress in their piano lessons. Studies have shown that students, who relearn the piano as adults, often perform better as they are able to approach the musical material by applying their problem solving skills which they have developed and refined through life experiences.

Ritmundi’s Piano Courses with Alicia have been designed for the student with the busy schedule. Each piano class is individually crafted to meet the needs of the student, so there is never the need to worry of being pushed in a direction that you or your child might not be prepared.

If you are interested in learning more about Piano Lessons With Alicia, please contact info@ritmundi.com for rates.

Music As Medicine

Published on CNN.com, there was written a beautiful story about the power of music and how it has the ability to communicate on a deeper level where words are limited.

Robert Gupta, a pre-med student, who was on his way to a successful career in medicine, realized that his path for healing lay in music. I am current PhD in Music Education at the University of Toronto and my focus is on various ways in which music lessons/activities can have an impact on self-esteem; therefore, one of my primary objectives as a piano instructor is to work with my students to realize their full-potential which can be applied in everyday life through music.

During each class, I encourage my students by acting as a guide, helping them successfully achieve the desired outcome of being confident and satisfied with their performance. I always find something positive to say to my students in class. I know that encouragement is gold and is also the key to accomplish all things.

In addition to offering piano lessons for beginners in Oakville, I also provide specialized piano and music classes for senior residence. This senior music program, RhythmWise, encourages senior participants to focus on the things that they are gaining through music, rather than the things that are being lost with age. Classes are available for individuals and small groups.

If you would like further information about RhythmWise Music Programs For Seniors, please contact Alicia at Ritmundi@gmail.com

Looking For A Piano Teacher in Oakville, Ontario?

When searching for a piano teacher, it is important to consider the communication style of the teacher and the manner in which information is presented.

If you live in the Oakville, Ontario area and looking for a qualified piano teacher with an individualisitc and creative approach to teaching, please contact Alicia on Ritmundi@gmail.com
for rates.

Piano Lessons With Alicia (Oakville, Ontario)

April 16,2010– Ritmundi WorldArts is pleased to announce the launch of Piano Courses With Alicia in Oakville, Ontario. Bush, during a 2007 tour of Brazil. With the application of music, in particular Afro-percussion, and dance, the focus is on using the arts as social interventions for at-risk-youth.

Within the Meninos do Morumbi community centre, I saw enthusiastic youth arriving after school, prepared for long rehearsals with the final production to be showcased at international venues in Europe and the US. I believe that having the opportunity to captivate a worldwide audience, not only has the potential to increase the youths' self-esteem, but I also feel that it educates others as to the similar social dilemmas which are being experienced in other cultures and how they are approached creatively.

Each child has the opportunity to participate in group dance, accompanied by their peers with live percussive rhythms. The music activities divert the young idol minds from indulging in such behaviors as the illegal use and sell of drugs, early teen pregnancy, and combat illiteracy.
In addition to the music activities, each adolescent learns computer skills. The centre's computer lab, provides the basic computer skills needed to build a foundation to improve their quality of life.

The community programme of Meninos do Morumbi has been creatively and uniquely designed to deliver an initiative not only for developing positive social interactions through the arts but also as a platform for learning skills to improve their quality life by the utilization of a genre of music and dance familiar to their community; Afro-based percussive rhythms such as Samba, Reggae and Axe. Music has the power to satisfy almost all social needs.

If you would like further information about Piano Lessons with Alicia, please contact ritmundi@gmail.com .

How to benefit from piano lessons online

Online piano lessons for beginners, is where new communication technology meets the traditional studies of music.

With technology changing the way in which education and business is conducted today, it is important to stay abreast of the growing demand for online learning.

Who can benefit from online piano courses?

• Busy professionals who want to learn to play the piano but often find “time” a factor in committing to a piano program.
• Parents of home schooled students, who want top quality piano courses for their children.
• Piano and keyboard students who are new to learning the piano.
• Anyone, who wants to participate in the new trend of online education by learning the piano at your own leisure.

What are the benefits of online piano courses?

Cost Effective
You will save on the cost of transportation by studying piano online.

Repeating Lessons
Enrolling in online courses give you the advantage to repeat or review areas where the student is having trouble. Through the arts, teachers and parents alike can demonstrate to their young students that there exist more similarities than differences between diverse cultures.

Cultural Arts makes learning more enjoyable.

Benefits of Music Education for Young Children

Cultural Arts in Education leads to respect of other ethnicities and traditions at an early age.

4. Students of music learn to stretch their inner resources in order to achieve a new level of excellence.

5. Through music study, students learn the value of effort and dedication to achieve excellence and the concrete rewards of hard work.

6. Music provides children with a means of self-expression. Self-esteem is a by-product of this self-expression.

7. Music performance teaches young people to conquer fear and to take risks. Just the other day, I was speaking with a friend about old church hymnals and how the style which was played in the church 25 to 30 years ago was no longer in use. The old hymnals, sometimes Negro Spirituals, were played by my grandmother as she accompanied the "senior" choir; this choir was made up of the elder members of the church. My grandmother had a natural feel for this style of music.

From those days of the senior choir, some time has passed, including my grandmother but I am aware that through music, especially through those old hymnals that she would play, her presence can be felt. Her presence is even stronger when I play from her old song book.

Listening to music and recalling the "good ole days" is a wonderful experience but to be able to perform those songs on the piano, in a familiar style, is a memorable experience which is indescribable. The performance of music has the power to evoke a strong connection with the past.

If you would like further details about Piano Classes with Alicia in Montreal, please contact ritmundi@gmail.com for rates.

Something New for 2010?

As the holiday season comes to an end, with Kwanzaa and New Year's being celebrated this week, many people may feel lost or a "let down" as they believe there is nothing else to look forward to, except Spring.

Well, why not try your hand at something new? The holiday season often creates a euphoric air of goodwill to all, even if it is only for a few weeks. Taking into consideration these sentiments of glad tidings, what better time to showcase your talents, than amongst those who enjoy festive gatherings? Hence the title for this blog, “Piano Lessons for the Holidays”.

Why should you be interested in doing something new and exciting, like taking a piano lesson, during these celebratory weeks? Number 1, you will have a short term goal that you can achieve which will bring instant gratification and will simply amaze and astonish your friends. Number 2, music is a great relaxant and a good escape, following a hectic day of shopping and having to deal with annoying family members...just saying (lol). Finally, if you are a holiday over-indulger, overeater, you can expect to burn, on average, at least 180 calories, just by playing the piano for 1 hour. Who’d ever think that you could get so much from a piano lesson!

var gaJsHost = (("https:" == document.location.protocol) ? Chapman says that the moment his daughter died, was the point that he felt that his faith was challenged, confronted with a god that he had not known before.

However, after some time of grieving, he reclaimed his strength and courage to "move-on" through the power of his music. The first song he composed, "Just Have to Wait," was an example of the raw emotion Chapman hoped to share. He said that these songs were written while sitting alone in the darkness, just aiming to share with his family the faith he has that each one of them will join the little daughter in heaven.

var gaJsHost = (("https:" == document.location.protocol) ? They are also practical tools to make learning fun.

Every week, I provide music and dance classes for 4 and 5 year olds at a local daycare in downtown Montreal. Various musical and dance genres from the Americas are used to teach young children about the beautiful and vibrant artistic cultures of North, Central, and South America and the Caribbean. Though the task for each weekly activity may change, the long-term objective remains the same; to teach children about American cultures via the arts and to increase social awareness.

How do the classes work?

Before each music/dance activity, the children are told a little information about the country which is being presented, such as languages spoken, the various cultural influences, and locating these places on the map. The objective is to show that there exist more similarities than differences, no matter where the children originally come from in the classroom; they are all able to find some connection with the cultures introduced.

The activities are generally conducted as a “follow-the-leader” exercise; the children are shown a few steps and then asked to imitate what they see. The activities are basic, to insure that all children, no matter their ability levels, are capable of participating. Musical instruments are often brought in so that the young students can experience the music first-hand. The young girls and boys are also given the opportunity to showcase the moves that they learned during the course of the 30 –minute class.

To learn more about music classes for children, please contact ritmundi@gmail.com for rates.

Music Classes For Beginners This Fall

Music promotes relaxation, whether it is as a practitioner or an active listener; it is an excellent outlet for children and adults alike.

As a piano instructor for beginners in Montreal, I find that many people register for my classes as a means to reduce stress from the office.

If you are interested in learning more about Piano Lessons With Alicia, please contact ritmundi@gmail.com for rates.

Adults and Nursery Rhymes

As a piano instructor for beginners in Montreal, I have found that my largest demographic has been international adult professionals (career speaking) with various capacity levels.

One may question how to be an effective teacher to so many students from diverse cultures? The answer is simple, the same way that you would approach other students. Assess their level of knowledge. If they are returning to the piano after having had a "break" for a few years, find out their capabilities, needs and objectives; become familiar with what is it they would like to obtain from the courses.

I have found that the use of nursery rhymes to be very effective in teaching ear training, memorization of simple melodies, and chord structures. This can be especially effective in that it not only encourages students to increase their ability of music recall but it is also a great way for you as a teacher to learn new repertoire, especially if the music is coming from diverse cultures.

How does this work? It is simple. Ask the student what song he/she remembers from his childhood, the song should be simple to recall for the student.

Suggestions:
1. Finding the melody on the piano (it might take a few tries but in the end, the student should have an understanding and the ability to play the simple melody)
2. Ask the student to find one note in the left hand that "compliments" the melody line. It is easier for some students to sing the melody before playing hands together on the piano. (It is ok if the student struggles with this, the objective is to develop and trust the ear)
3. Play the accompaniment as a chord built on 3rds, notes c and e for example. This will allow the student to see immediate progress; the music will begin to take form and will sound fuller.

A simple melody can be very rewarding in so many ways. Adult students, generally speaking, want to see immediate progress. This exercise provides the foundations for understanding the structure of music, i.e. ear training, chord structure, playing by rote, memorization, and coordination. Instant gratification it brings, for focused students.

If you are looking for creative ways of encouraging adult beginners, this is a fun exercise.

For more information on piano course registration, please contact ritmundi@gmail.com for rates.

Music As Therapy

Music, enjoyable, exciting and emotionally provoking, can also be a valuable tool for managing stress.

For more information on piano course registration, please contact ritmundi@gmail.com for rates.

A Tragic End For A Lost Muse

As reported in worldwide publications, the “King of Pop”, Michael Jackson passed away suddenly on June 25, 2009, at the age of 50. His unexpected departure has left the masses speechless and in shock, and his talent now recognized and celebrated as a rare gem which served its purpose to a generation.

Looking at the career of Michael, which spanned over 40 years, one can only acknowledge that he was a uniquely creative individual who displayed artistic ability at a very young age. According to numerous reports, Michael Jackson,as a child with a mind beyond his years, yearned for the simplicities and enjoyments of being a child, but these desires were forfeited for the cause of his ingenuity. His ingenious mind was a world that very few could comprehend. This being the case, the question is posed, how does one (a creative person) develop the art of balancing creativity in his/hers daily life?

Artists are a “special breed” of beings. Having spoken with numerous people in the arts, they unanimously confirm that because of their creative nature, they often find it difficult to be comprehended by the “outside” world. Consumption by their artistry, their lives and thoughts are plunged into a world which can be difficult at times to emerge. If one is not able to find the equilibrium between their creative passions and “reality”, there is a risk of alienation. These are actual summarized accounts from musicians, dancers, and visual artists; it is easy to get lost in that fantasy world if one does not remain grounded.

The art of balancing creativity comes from awareness. Awareness starts by acknowledging your creative intellectual needs but also the importance of interaction with activities and people outside the discipline. The communication with non-artists, I believe is essential because it provides the ability to remain “functioning” in society. Take a break; it can only make your creative flow stronger.

The creative persona is celebrated and at the same time misunderstood by society, which often creates conflict within this unique individual, and Michael Jackson was no exception. Michael Jackson was a great prodigy of our time who was lost in his creative thoughts and now lost to a generation. Based on various accounts, Michael longed for the indulgences of childhood when he was a young boy but his career always took precedence. Michael exemplifies the recurring theme of the tragic end for a lost muse.

Success without a sense of balance can be tormentous.

If you would like further information about piano courses with Alicia, please contact Ritmundi@gmail.com

Creating Performance Opportunities

If you are a private piano instructor, it is important to create opportunities for your students to share their new talents, skills with an audience. This audience could be comprised of fellow students, family and/or friends. The event of course, is all relevant to the comfort level of the student to perform.

A few weeks ago, I had a small party entitled, "Be Inspired By Your Muse". The objective of this gathering was to provide my students with a performance platform to share their creativity in a "safe" environment. Those participating ranged from the ages of 4 to 70, which was great because it demonstrated to those students with less confidence, that everyone had the same goal which was to learn to play the piano. From the responses of the students, it was a positive experience in that they could see young and older students alike showcasing their achievements from enrollment in the 5 week piano term.

Piano courses are enjoyable and active means for increasing self-confidence, for both children and adults. When the student is provided the opportunity to share the creative produce of weekly classes, the level of assurance in one's ability increases. In short, music performances do not have to be a formal event but an informal gathering centered on the celebration of creativity.

If you would like further information about piano courses with Alicia, please contact Ritmundi@gmail.com

Music......A Great Intervention

In a recent article published on CNN.com, it was stated that music has been found to be a great intervention for sufferers of Parkinson's disease in the UK.

With funding from the Parkinson's Disease Society, the London-based ensemble, "Sing for Joy" was created. The group consists of around two dozen singers, including sufferers of Parkinson's and multiple sclerosis, others recovering from conditions including stroke or cancer, plus their carers, family and friends.

Members of the group states that it is easy to get overwhelmed by the disease but by attending singing rehearsal once a week, they are provided with a much needed outlet.

Singing provides physical and neurological benefits for the choir members, as stated by the article. A common symptom of Parkinson's disease and similar conditions is voice loss and each week the group begins its rehearsals with vocal exercises worked out with speech therapists.

"All neurological conditions affect the throat because it has so many muscles," says Sarah Benton, another choir member with multiple sclerosis. "So singing, which makes you lift up your body and expand your lungs, is perfect for neurological diseases", as quoted by the choir member.

"While "Sing for Joy's" DIY-style music therapy has provided obvious social, mental and physical benefits for its members, there is a growing body of clinical evidence suggesting that music can play a key role in aiding recovery or helping sufferers cope with a broad range of brain-based conditions", according to the article.

To read the entire article, see Music a 'mega-vitamin' for the brain

If you would like further information about piano courses with Alicia, please contact Ritmundi@gmail.com

Benefits of Cultural Arts for Children

Exposure to the arts at a young age opens your child’s mind; but when combined with the music and dance of other cultures, your child has an unlimited access to the world.

Music and dance is an excellent way to introduce children to history and languages. Through the arts, teachers and parents alike can demonstrate to their young students that there exist more similarities than differences between diverse cultures.

Cultural Arts makes learning more enjoyable.

Benefits of Music Education for Young Children

It teaches children how to deal with anxiety at an early age which makes it less of a problem later on in life.

To learn more, please contact Alicia on Ritmundi@gmail.com

Music and Dances of the Americas for Children

The Music and Dances of the Americas course, created by Alicia Howard, has been designed to introduce young minds to the beautiful and vibrant cultural arts of the Americas.

Each weekly 20-30 minute class will present your child with the opportunity to participate in sing-a-longs and to learn the various folk dances of the Caribbean and Latin America.

What a fantastic way to encourage and support the curiosity of the cultural arts in young children!

If you are interested in learning more about piano courses with Alicia in downtown Montreal, please do not hesitate to contact Ritmundi@gmail.com for rates.

Bringing Pleasure Back To Piano

Remember those days when practicing the piano were more pain than pleasure? When there was the feeling of dread when your teacher would ask, “Well, show me what you’ve worked on for this week!”? These are memories which often haunt the minds of those who would like to be reintroduced to the piano but have reservations. Let me reassure you that these feelings can be overcome with the guidance of a good piano teacher.

Piano classes can be enjoyable and it should be the objective of the professional instructor to find the means of incorporating excitement with learning. You may ask, “Is this possible?” And my response, “Of course, anything is possible! It just takes ingenuity and great listening skills.”

When working with adult students, you will often find that some may hold the belief that previously learned information in music has been forgotten; there is a general underestimation of one’s own ability. An experienced piano instructor will know how to assess students’ capabilities in order to better comprehend what information has been retained. The assessment could consist of the basics, such as a review of the names of notes, scales, note values, and general music terminology. It is up to the teacher to bring forth that “hidden” knowledge.

Once the instructor has an idea of the student’s level and the best approach for the piano courses, it is from there that exercises and music can be assigned. When making assignments, the students should be allowed to participate in the process. Take into consideration the genres in which they might be interested. It is this process which brings excitement to learning and encourages the student to bring forth their personal best in practice.

Learning the piano does not have to be boring, nor does it have to be viewed as a chore. However, it should be viewed as an opportunity for active learning, getting out of it what you put in. When you, as the student, begin to feel part of a team in your learning and start to see progress in each piano course, it is then that the true pleasure and satisfaction begins.

If you are interested in learning more about piano courses with Alicia in downtown Montreal, please do not hesitate to contact Ritmundi@gmail.com for rates.

Music: The Healthy Stress Management Tool

Music, enjoyable, exciting and emotionally provoking, can also be a valuable tool for managing stress. Allow the student to express what they expect and discuss with them how their objectives can be delivered with your teaching style.

I enjoying teaching, and what is most rewarding is when I receive feedback. The student's feedback allows me, as the instructor, to see what is effective and what could be adjusted to suit his/her needs. Having a certain amount of flexibility with your students will develop a stronger drive for excellence and increase attendance. Why? Because the student will feel that you are taking their suggestions into consideration.

In addition to having a Master's Degree in Music, I have also established that intuition can be an effective tool when teaching. Apply your "gut instinct" as to the music selection you believe that the student is able to master. Students, especially the adults, want to feel a sense of achievement and accomplishment when learning music. They want to perform something that is familiar to all, whether it be "Ode to Joy" or Gershwin, they want to "play something that sounds like something". So let them......this is adaptation and flexibility on your part.

Music courses should encompass various perspectives of the student's ability, personality, and experience. If you, as the instructor, can recognize this, you will have happy and satisfied students.

Learning the piano does not have to be "serious", make it enjoyable!

If you are interested in learning more about piano courses with Alicia in downtown Montreal, please do not hesitate to contact Ritmundi@gmail.com for rates.

FOR OLDER ADULT PIANO STUDENTS

If you appreciate and love to listen to music, you can learn to play the piano, no matter your age. One’s musical age is much more important than the chronological age of a person, according to Dr. Edwin Gordon of Temple University.

Success

Older students often find success at the piano as they are able to define the goals that are to be achieved and often the life experiences of the older students shape the manner in which each lesson and practice session is approached. You’ll also find that you will have greater success than some of your younger counter-parts due to those experiences. The keys to learning to play the piano as an adult are: realistic expectations, consistent practice, perseverance, and personal desire.

The Health Benefits

It has been documented that by practicing the piano for one hour a day burns up to 240 calories. It is a great way to stay healthy. In addition, Senior citizens who register for piano courses often find it an interesting way in maintaining good health and strength. The piano is a pleasant way to exercise the mind and body. Piano lessons are often recommended by Doctors as a way to loosen the joints and reduce painful inflammation of sufferers of arthritis.

The most important health benefit from studying the piano may be the mental exercise of listening and responding to music. Adult first-timers refer to their past experiences, with learning the piano as rigid, non-effective, and boring.

The approach that is taken in my courses, is to meet each student where they are. This means listening to the stories of past experiences, give heed to where they want to go, and make note of what they want to achieve. It is also important to see each student as an individual; what may work for one student, may not be as effective for the other.

What can you expect to learn in the first lesson? This all depends you!

Some students have been amazed, from the first lesson, at their ability to play a C/Do Major scale with correct fingering, play the C Major scale applying various note values, and the capability to recognize the whole and semi-tone intervals which make up a major scale, for example. These are the basics but very important for a strong foundation for being a success in your piano course.

If you are interested in learning more about piano courses with Alicia in downtown Montreal, please do not hesitate to contact Ritmundi@gmail.com for rates.

Private Piano Lessons In Montreal

As a piano teacher, I frequently asked the question, "When should my child begin private piano lessons?". My response, around the age of 5 or 6, when the child begins to show an interest and most importantly, when the child has the capability to focus on a task for 10 - 15 minutes. At this age, simple rhythmic and melodic patterns can be taught.

The piano courses that I create are carefully assessed and then designed around each individual student's ability. Everyone learns differently!

I personally began playing the piano, mainly by rote, at the age of 3 years. However, my first formal lesson was received at 6 years old. My family was very supportive and active in my learning as they too were pianists. This is a very important detail when a child is learning a new skill, family interests and participation.

If you would like further information on piano class registration, please contact Alicia on ritmundi@gmail.com for rates.

How Effective: The First Class

Well of course, I have many years of teaching piano; however it never ceases to amaze me how effective I am with my students.

My approach to teaching piano is to deliver the material, using the language that is common to the student. By taking this approach, I find that my students feel more comfortable with me and are more productive. Each piano course is assessment based to determine the appropriate learning and skill level of your child; all lessons are paced to your child's ability.

Benefits of Learning to Play

Did you know

Research shows that piano students are better equipped to comprehend mathematical and scientific concepts. A group of preschoolers received private piano keyboard lessons and singing lessons. A second group received private computer lessons. Those children who received piano/keyboard training performed 34% higher on tests measuring spatial-temporal ability than the others - even those who received computer training. "Spatial-temporal" is basically proportional reasoning - ratios, fractions, proportions and thinking in space and time. This concept has long been considered a major obstacle in the teaching of elementary math and science.

Did you know

Young children with developed rhythm skills perform better academically in early school years. Findings of a recent study showed that there was a significant difference in the academic achievement levels of students classified according to rhythmic competency. Students who were achieving at academic expectation scored high on all rhythmic tasks, while many of those who scored lower on the rhythmic test achieved below academic expectation.

Did you know

Music training helps under-achievers. In Rhode Island, researchers studied eight public school first grade classes. Half of the classes became "test arts" groups, receiving ongoing music and visual arts training. In kindergarten, this group had lagged behind in scholastic performance. After seven months, the students were given a standardized test. The "test arts" group had caught up to their fellow students in reading and surpassed their classmates in math by 22%. In the second year of the project, the arts students widened this margin even further. Students were also evaluated on attitude and behavior. Classroom teachers noted improvement in these areas also.

Did you know

A ten-year study, tracking more than 25,000 students, shows that music-making improves test scores. Regardless of socioeconomic background, music-making students get higher marks in standardized tests than those who had no music involvement. The test scores studied were not only standardized tests, such as the SAT, but also in reading proficiency exams.

Did you know

High school music students score higher on SATs in both verbal and math than their peers. In 2001, SAT takers with coursework/experience in music performance scored 57 points higher on the verbal portion of the test and 41 points higher on the math portion than students with no coursework/experience in the arts.

Did you know

College-age musicians are emotionally healthier than their non-musician counterparts. A study conducted at the University of Texas looked at 362 students who were in their first semester of college. They were given three tests, measuring performance anxiety, emotional concerns and alcohol related problems. In addition to having fewer battles with the bottle, researchers also noted that the college-aged music students seemed to have surer footing when facing tests.

To register for piano classes with Alicia in Downtown Montreal, please contact ritmundi@gmail.com for rates.

var gaJsHost = (("https:" == document.location.protocol) ?
